Dragon Ball Z

Dragon Ball is a Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Animation. Dragon Ball Z continues the adventures of Goku, who, along with his companions, defends the Earth against villains ranging from aliens (Frieza), androids (Cell) and other creatures (Majin Buu). While the original Dragon Ball anime followed Goku from childhood to early adulthood, Dragon Ball Z is a continuation of his adult life, but at the same time parallels the life of his son, Gohan, as well as the development of his rival Vegeta.

This is where the story begins. You start out meeting kid Goku, then onto Bulma, and so on. I recommend starting here. This one is full of adventure and it doesn’t get too crazy with the powers. Plus, as stated earlier, everything begins here.

Dragon Ball Z

Everyone knows about DBZ. Even if you aren’t a fan you probably heard about it in some way. This is where you see the legendary transformation for the first time(not so legendary now with all these other Saiyan forms going on).

You get to meet new iconic characters and see epic fights that 20 episodes! (Goku vs Frieza). In reality, most fights could end in 1–2 episodes, but there’s a lot of unnecessary talking and powering up which takes the majority of an episode apparently. Yep, you’ll enjoy sitting through all that.

Dragon Ball Z picks up five years after the end of the Dragon Ball anime, with Goku now a young adult and father to his son, Gohan. A humanoid alien named Raditz arrives on Earth in a spacecraft and tracks down Goku, revealing to him that he is his long-lost older brother and that they are members of a near-extinct extraterrestrial warrior race called the Saiyans. The Saiyans had sent Goku (originally named "Kakarot") to Earth as an infant to conquer the planet for them, but he suffered a traumatic brain injury soon after his arrival and lost all memory of his mission, as well as his blood-thirsty Saiyan nature. Goku refuses to help Raditz continue the mission, which results in Raditz kidnapping Gohan. Goku decides to team up with his former enemy Piccolo to defeat Raditz and save his son while sacrificing his own life in the process. In the afterlife, Goku trains under the ruler of the North Galaxy, King Kai, and is taught the Kaio-ken and Spirit Bomb techniques, before being revived by the Dragon Balls a year later to save the Earth from Raditz' allies; Nappa and the self-proclaimed "Prince of all Saiyans", Vegeta, who arrive before Goku returns. Piccolo is killed by Nappa during the battle, along with Goku's allies Yamcha, Tien Shinhan, and Chiaotzu (with Chiaotzu sacrificing himself to save Tien), and both Kami and the Dragon Balls cease to exist as a result of Piccolo's death. After Goku finally arrives at the battlefield, he avenges his fallen friends by defeating Nappa with his new level of power. Vegeta executes Nappa for his failure and does battle with Goku, but is ultimately defeated thanks to the efforts of Gohan and Goku's other surviving allies, Krillin and Yajirobe. At Goku's request, they spare Vegeta's life and allow him to escape Earth, with Vegeta vowing to return and destroy the planet out of revenge for his humiliation at Goku's hands.

During the battle, Krillin overhears Vegeta mentioning the original set of Dragon Balls from Piccolo's homeworld, Namek. While Goku recovers from his injuries, Gohan, Krillin, and Goku's oldest friend Bulma depart for Namek to use these Dragon Balls to revive their fallen friends. However, they discover that Vegeta's superior, the galactic tyrant Lord Frieza, is already there, looking to use the Dragon Balls for himself so that he can achieve immortality. A fully healed Vegeta arrives on Namek as well, also seeking immortality from the Dragon Balls, which leads to several battles between him and Frieza's henchmen. Realizing he is overpowered, Vegeta teams up with Gohan and Krillin to fight the Ginyu Force, a team of elite mercenaries summoned by Frieza. After Goku finally arrives on Namek, the epic battle with Frieza himself comes to a close when Goku transforms into the fabled Super Saiyan of legend and defeats him before escaping Namek as the planet is destroyed in a massive explosion.

Upon his return to Earth a year later, Goku encounters a time traveler named Trunks, the future son of Bulma and Vegeta, who warns Goku that two Androids ("Artificial Humans") will appear three years later, seeking revenge against Goku for destroying the Red Ribbon Army when he was a child. During this time, an evil lifeform called Cell emerges and, after absorbing two of the Androids to achieve his "perfect form", holds his own fighting tournament to decide the fate of the Earth, known as the "Cell Games". After Goku sacrifices his own life a second time, to no avail, Gohan avenges his father by destroying Cell after ascending to the second level of Super Saiyan.

Seven years later, Goku is revived for one day to reunite with his loved ones and meet his youngest son, Goten, at the Tenkaichi Budōkai (Strongest Under the Heavens Martial Arts Tournament"). Soon after, Goku and his allies are drawn into a fight by the Supreme Kai against a magical being named Majin Buu summoned by the evil wizard Babidi. After numerous battles that result in the deaths of many of Goku's allies as well as the destruction of Earth, Goku (whose life is fully restored by the Elder Supreme Kai) kills Kid Buu (the original and most powerful form of Majin Buu) with a Spirit Bomb attack containing the energy of all the inhabitants of Earth, who were resurrected along with the planet by the Namekian Dragon Balls. Goku makes a wish for Buu to be reincarnated as a good person and ten years later, at another Tenkaichi Budōkai, he meets Buu's human reincarnation, Uub. Leaving the match between them unfinished, Goku departs with Uub to train him to become Earth's new defender.

Dragon Ball GT (not canon)

Dragon Ball GT was never 'canon' in the sense that Toriyama Akira didn't work on it. ... Officially, it's considered not canon to the series. Toriyama himself said that it's a side story.

This isn’t canon. It has a completely different story and if you try to connect it to the main canon series you will find it doesn't make sense because it's not apart of it at all. You could skip this one and not miss anything, but there are some cool characters and you see SS4 Goku and Vegeta.

Five years after the 28th Tenkaichi Budōkai ( "The Number One Under Heaven Martial Arts Gathering") (10 years in the Funimation dub), Goku is accidentally turned back into a child by the Black Star Dragon Balls ("Ultimate Dragon Ball") used by his old enemy Emperor Pilaf and is forced to travel across the universe to retrieve them, accompanied by his granddaughter Pan and Trunks. The trio goes through various adventures in their journey to find the Black Star Dragon Balls until they encounter the artificial Tuffle parasite, Baby, who intends to destroy the Saiyan race as his revenge for their extermination of the Tuffles many years ago.

Baby can invade other people's bodies and turn them into Tuffles, as well as mutating a host's body and combining its power with his own to become an incredibly powerful warrior. After turning practically all of the Earth's population, including the Saiyans, into Tuffles, Baby decides to convert Vegeta's body into his own and use it to kill Goku. Goku fights him and is quickly defeated, but, after having his tail regenerated by Kibito Kai and Old Kai, he transforms and achieves the power of Super Saiyan 4. In this new form, Goku easily overpowers Baby before destroying the evil Tuffle by propelling him into the sun with a 10x Kamehameha"10-Fold Turtle Destruction Wave"). Piccolo then sacrifices himself to permanently destroy the Black Star Dragon Balls when the Earth explodes after Goku and the others help the people of Earth evacuate to Planet Plant, which Baby had wished back into existence using the Black Star Dragon Balls.

A year after Baby's defeat, Dr. Myuu (Baby's creator) and Dr. Gero (creator of the Red Ribbon Army androids) create an evil replica of Android 17 and have it fuse with the original Android 17, creating Super Android 17. Super 17 seems impervious to Goku's attacks, but when Android 18 attacks him for murdering her husband, Krillin, Goku takes advantage of the distraction to penetrate through Super 17 with his Super Dragon Fist technique, then unleashes a Rapid-Fire Kamehameha ("Continuous Turtle Destruction Wave") that completely eradicates him.

Due to the constant misuse of the Dragon Balls, seven Shadow Dragons are then summoned to destroy the Earth. All but the most powerful, Syn Shenron, is defeated by Goku and Pan. Syn Shenron appears to be losing until he absorbs the Dragon Balls and gains tremendous power, transforming into Omega Shenron and surpassing even Super Saiyan 4 Goku's power. Goku is about to sacrifice himself to destroy the evil dragon, but Vegeta intervenes and gains the Super Saiyan 4 transformation with help from Bulma's newest invention, the Blutz Wave Generator. Goku and Vegeta merge using the Fusion Dance technique to create Gogeta, who uses his immense power to beat Omega Shenron to a pulp. However, after being too confident in his ability to defeat Omega Shenron, he uses up too much time in an attempt to embarrass him. Gogeta then defuses and Goku and Vegeta revert to their base forms. Eventually, using the energy of every living being in the universe, Goku creates the incredibly powerful Universal Spirit Bomb and uses it to destroy Omega Shenron once and for all.

The real Shenron appears to grant Goku and his friends one last wish and then proceeds to disappear - along with Goku and the Dragon Balls. Several decades later, Goku's great-great-grandson, Goku Jr., competes in the 64th Tenkaichi Budōkai against Vegeta's descendant, Vegeta Jr., as the now-elderly Pan cheers him on. Pan then sees a rejuvenated Goku and tries to approach him, but he quickly disappears into the crowd. Goku then leaves the Tenkaichi Budōkai with a flashback covering all the events of his timeline. After the flashback ends, Goku then catches his Power Pole and rides off on his Flying Nimbus cloud.

Dragon Ball Z Kai

The same as Z just with less filler and faster pacing. The series was extensively "refreshed" for Japanese television. This is not a new animation, but rather a remastered edit that runs through Dragon Ball Z to provide a presentation that is as faithful to the original manga as possible, removing a majority of DBZ's padding and filler. Part of this is reformatting and extending the picture to 16:9 Widescreen. However, for episodes 1-98, this only exists with the footage used for the Japanese and Nicktoons broadcasts; the footage used for the home media release and Toonami broadcasts are in the original 4:3 ratio. Through digital processing, the image was made vibrant. All the music, damage and noise remaining on the Dragon Ball Z film is removed, making the image much clearer in high-definition.

Watch dbz kai hd

A comparison with the original video side-by-side shows considerable cropping to achieve the 16:9 aspect ratio. However, it seems carefully done to avoid missing anything important. The original image is not stretched, just cut where it would be more appropriate, being a "tilt and scan" or "reverse pan and scan" of the original Dragon Ball Z footage.

Dragon Ball Kai includes a complete re-recording of the dialog by most of the original Japanese voice cast (in part due to the master audio for Z being permanently lost), as well as completely new sound design with updated sound effects. The opening and ending themes are completely new. Takayoshi Tanimoto performs the series' opening themes "Dragon Soul" and "Kuu-Zen-Zetsu-Go", and the closing theme "Yeah! Break! Care! Break!" This new opening and closing credits have newly animated appearances by most of the main cast, as well as for the villains, such as Raditz, Nappa, Vegeta, Frieza, Zarbon, Dodoria, and the Ginyu Force. There's also a new artwork clip after every intermission, such as one of Cui and Vegeta in episode 19. Unlike the original Dragon Ball Z, which only had two sets of eye catches for the entire series, in Dragon Ball Kai, it changes every few episodes to feature an appropriate character ensemble/situation.

As with most filler sequences in Dragon Ball Z, the Garlic Jr. Saga does not air in Dragon Ball Kai. Originally lasting from episodes 108 to 117, the saga featured the return of Garlic Jr., the main villain from the first DBZ movie. The saga was completely filler and Garlic Jr. or any of his henchmen did not appear in the original manga. Because Kai stays truer to the manga, this saga has been completely cut out.

Revised Pallete

The first 98 episodes of Kai feature new digital animation, often used to rectify continuity errors in the source print. Among other things, Vegeta's red palette while on an unnamed planet at the beginning of the series has been altered to the color scheme used from his arrival on Earth-onwards; however, Nappa's armor still uses a different palette, bearing brown pauldrons and banding instead of the standard marigold. Shots of Piccolo bleeding red blood are also altered to recolor his blood purple, such as in the Dragon Ball recap of episode one or during his fight with Raditz. However, when Raditz is explaining to Goku about the Saiyans, Vegeta has his red color scheme.

For the Androids Saga, the animation in the opening scene and closing credits have been altered a bit to fit the current storyline. New animations of Dr. Gero, Android 19, Android 17, Android 18, Android 16, and Cell appear, as well as the Super Saiyan appearances of Goku, Vegeta, Future Trunks, and Gohan. The new intro also showcases battles taking place within the saga, such as Vegeta vs. #18, Piccolo vs. #17, #16 vs. Cell, Goku vs. Cell, and ends showing a sequence of the Dragon Team standing together with their Cell Saga appearances. The ending credits are also different, showcasing Goku flying with Shenron as the faces of the main cast appear. He proceeds to transform into a Super Saiyan and the cast joins him in flight. The sequence ends with the Z Fighters standing in front of the Earth, with Shenron and Porunga in the backdrop.

For the Majin Buu Saga, the show uses a different remaster done in-house at Toei Animation. This version is shot in cropped 16:9 rather than the original 4:3 ratio, even for the American release, and features a noticeable greenish tint compared to the Dragon Ball Z Blu-rays. Additionally, the neo-classic animation by Q-TEC that appeared throughout the previous 98 episodes is gone (due to Toei now re-mastering the footage in-house), and a new animated intro sequence for the series is used with fights and events corresponding with the Majin Buu Saga, such as Goku vs Majin Vegeta, Super Buu uses his Human Extinction Attack, Goku, Vegeta, Goten, and Trunks fusing into Vegito and Gotenks, respectively, then moves to Potential Unleashed Gohan and Gotenks vs Super Buu, and finally, Goku transforming into Super Saiyan 3 and then fighting Kid Buu, with the former launching a massive energy blast and the latter firing his Kamehameha, the sequence ends with the heroes in assembly as Super Saiyan 3 Goku drops by and powers up. This arc had five different newly animated endings, with each ending that corresponds to the arc's sagas or situations (like "Oh Yeah!!!!!!!" for the Fusion Saga or "Don't Let Me Down" for the Kid Buu and the Peaceful World Sagas.)

Toei released the first set on DVD and Blu-ray in September 2009 in a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is said that is how it was originally created and was only 16:9 ratio before because it was cropped for HD TV. The refreshed series also spawned a stage play named Dragon Ball Kai: Super Battle Stage.

Dragon Ball Super

The movies almost have the same story as the beginning of DBS. I’d just skip the movies and get to Super, but whichever way you do it, you won’t really lose anything.

Sometime after the defeat of Majin Buu, peace has returned to Earth. Goku has settled down and works as a farmer to support his family. His family and friends live peaceful lives. However, a new threat appears in the form of the God of Destruction named Beerus, who is considered to be the most terrifying and the second most powerful being in Universe Seven. After awakening from decades of slumber, Beerus tells his Angel assistant and teacher named Whis that he is eager to fight the legendary warrior whom he had seen in a prophecy known as the Super Saiyan God while threatening by destroying earth if he loses to him. To protect Earth, Goku transforms into the Super Saiyan God to fight Beerus by using the power of five Super Saiyans, which includes Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, Trunks, and the baby named Pan in Videl's womb. Goku shows an immense amount of power that is enough to impress Beerus. Despite losing, Goku's efforts appease the God of Destruction enough that he decides to spare the planet.

While Goku and Vegeta leave with Beerus and Whis to train for a year, the remaining remnants of Frieza's army arrive on Earth in search of the Dragon Balls to revive Frieza. A few months after coming back to life and training, Frieza gathers his forces and returns to enact his revenge on Goku. Despite achieving a new transformation called Golden Frieza, he is defeated by Goku and Vegeta, who have both mastered the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan transformation. Frieza blows up the Earth in retaliation. However, with Whis's ability to manipulate time, Goku destroyed Frieza once again.

Champa, Beerus' brother, and the God of Destruction of Universe Six convince Beerus to hold a tournament between the best fighters from their universes. Whis reveals that there are twelve universes in existence. The universe that Goku and his friends are from is called Universe Seven. Champa also reveals the reward for their tournament will be the Super Dragon Balls, which are planet-sized Dragon Balls whose wish-granting abilities are practically limitless. Champa intends to swap Universe Six's destroyed Earth with Universe Seven for their cuisine. Goku and his friends join the tournament. Each match in the tournament shows different surprises and abilities. The tournament reaches its climax in the second-to-last match between Goku and Hit. After a failed attempt to lift the rules to face Hit in his full power, Goku forfeits the match. However, Hit forfeits the final match since he was inspired by Goku to do the same thing. The tournament concludes with Universe Seven's victory. Beerus secretly wishes for the Super Dragon Balls to restore Universe Six's Earth.

Goku later meets and befriends Grand Zenō, who is the Omni-King of all universes. Goku promises to bring him a friend to play with. Later, Future Trunks reappears and brings bad news of a new and powerful enemy that is a counterpart of Goku, who is known as Goku Black. Goku and the others eventually discover that Goku Black is actually a Supreme Kai apprentice from Universe Ten named Zamasu, who hijacked Goku's body from a different timeline as part of his plan to attain immortality and wipe out all mortals and gods. In the end, after a long ultimate battle that occurs the future timeline, Zamasu is erased from existence along with the entire future timeline by Future Grand Zenō, who accompanies Goku back to the present timeline. Goku fulfills his promise to Present Grand Zenō by introducing him to his future self. Whis travels to the future to prevent Zamasu's rise to power.

Sometime after Future Trunks returns to his restored future, Present Grand Zenō and Future Grand Zenō hold a new tournament called the Tournament of Power. At Goku's suggestion, the multiverse tournament features a team of fighters from eight of the twelve universes. However, it becomes a battle for survival when both kings declare that the universes defeated at the tournament will be erased. Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Krillin, Android 17, Android 18, Piccolo, Tien, Master Roshi, and a temporarily revived Frieza join the tournament as representatives for Universe Seven to protect it. The Universe Seven team must battle against many formidable warriors from the other universes such as Universe Eleven's Pride Trooper named Jiren. During the fight, Goku briefly attains a new godly form known as Ultra Instinct, which increases his agility and power. Ultra Instinct allows Goku to simultaneously attack and dodge without having to think of the latter. The tournament ends with Goku and Frieza taking Jiren down along with themselves, which leaves Android 17 as the last remaining fighter and the winner of the Tournament of Power. He is awarded one wish from the Super Dragon Balls, which he uses to restore all of the erased universes. It is revealed that Present Grand Zenō and Future Grand Zenō expected the universes to be restored. If the wish was used for selfish purposes then both kings would have erased all of existence. For his efforts in the Tournament of Power, Frieza is fully revived and rebuilds his army. Goku and his friends return to their daily lives on Earth. While sparring, Goku reveals to Vegeta that he is unable to activate Ultra Instinct again. Goku and Vegeta pledge to become more powerful.

Sometime after the Tournament of Power, Goku, Vegeta, and Majin Buu are contacted by the Galactic Patrol who enlists their help to recapture a dangerous fugitive called Moro (who was being held prisoner for 10 million years after using his powers to extract the life force of countless planets. Their search for Moro leads them to New Namek, but they fail to stop his plan to use the Namekians' Dragon Balls to restore his lost youth and release all criminals in the Galactic Patrol's custody. Since then, Moro and the escaped convicts had attacked several planets together while Goku and Vegeta make preparations for their impending rematch against him. While Goku seeks for a way to master the Ultra Instinct, Vegeta sets to planet Yardrat, where Goku learned the skill of teleportation.
